The story of the discovery of the AIDS virus is both a medical adventure and a real financial western, a battle where all shots were allowed. The anniversary that we celebrated this weekend is that of the publication by the American journal “Science” of the work of a French team. It all started with a young doctor, Willy Rozenbaum, who worked at the Pitié Salpêtrière hospital in Paris and who had the intuition that AIDS might come from a retrovirus. He sends samples of a patient’s lymph nodes to the Pasteur Institute. A 36-year-old researcher, François Barré-Sinoussi gets to work in the laboratory of Jean Claude Cherman, himself directed by Luc Montagnier.
