It will be 10 years since seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher suffered a skiing accident that changed his life forever. In fact, his injuries were so serious that he has not been photographed or seen in public since.
Recently, his brother Ralf Schumacher, who was his training partner, shared his thoughts on that turbulent time in his and his family’s lives.
In a conversation with ‘Sky Germany’, Schumacher spoke regarding how his older brother helped him find his place in Formula 1.
“Michael wasn’t just my brother. When we were kids, he was also my coach and mentor. He taught me literally everything regarding kart racing. There may be a seven-year age difference, but he was always by my side. We raced together, we practice overtaking maneuvers and everything that matters in motorsports,” he said.

Also, he remembered what the beginnings of his brother’s career were like. ‘We were very lucky. We basically grew up in the gravel pit next to the kart track in Kerpen. When our parents bought the house next door, we initially shared a room and slept on a mattress on the floor because we didn’t have money for a bed yet. And then Michael became a junior racing driver for Mercedes. Even today it remains incredible what arose from these circumstances,” he reported.
Likewise, he revealed that the accident not only changed his brother’s life, but that of his entire family. “It has been a significant experience for me but, of course, even more so for his children. Life is sometimes unfair. That day brought a lot of bad luck. This destiny has changed our family,” she assured.
Ralf Schumacher did not give details regarding how his brother’s health is currently, as he commented that he has distanced himself from his family and that he occasionally sees his nephews: “When I see his children Gina-Maria and Mick, my heart smiles.”
Furthermore, he made it clear that he does not make decisions in his brother’s life: “If anyone in the family seeks my advice, I am there. But they go their own way,” he concluded.
