“Carnal and captivating”: this is what Ida Rubinstein (1885-1960), an eccentric dancer of the Belle Epoque, wanted when she commissioned a ballet from Maurice Ravel (1875-1937). Thus will be born, not without suffering, the Bolero. Directed by Anne Fontaine, Bolero is more than a biopic dedicated to the composer. The filmmaker highlights this unique score whose rhythmic ostinato on the snare drum hit the headlines when it was created. “I have only written one masterpiece in my life, and there is no music in it,” Ravel quipped.

Behind the scenes, the legal battle over the composer’s legacy is also ongoing. On February 14, following six years of proceedings, the composer’s beneficiaries tried before the Judicial Court of Nanterre, in France, to have the Bolero as a collaborative work between Ravel and the decorator Alexandre Benois (1870-1960).
