Gaza – The Commissioner of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, called for increasing international pressure on Israel to open more ways for aid to enter the Gaza Strip.
Lazzarini wrote in a post on the “X” platform: “The renewed binding order from the International Court of Justice yesterday is a stark reminder that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is man-made and is getting worse. The order calls on the State of Israel to cooperate with the United Nations to facilitate the delivery of aid.” Much-needed humanitarian relief to Gaza…and cooperation means that Israel must reverse its decision and allow this.”
He added: “Member states must put more pressure on Israel to implement the International Court of Justice’s order. Those who stopped funding UNRWA must reconsider their decision to allow the agency to fulfill its mandate, including helping to avoid famine. Bold actions cannot wait any longer.”
Lazzarini’s comment came one day following a unanimous order was issued by the International Court of Justice obliging Israel to take immediate and effective measures to deliver aid to Gaza.
The International Court of Justice called on Israel to open land bridges to Gaza to allow the flow of humanitarian aid, and indicated that land aid alone would be sufficient to prevent famine in Gaza.
