The unprecedented battle in the midfield of Formula 1: “Every little detail is important”

The battle in the middle of Formula 1 is fierce. Every tenth of a second counts in the highest class of the autosport. This also applies to the VisaCashAppRB F1 team. Daniel Ricciardo was in the qualifying of the Heineken Dutch Grand Prix already eliminated in Q1, while Yuki Tsunoda made it to Q2 at Circuit Zandvoort. Jody Egginton, Technical Director of the Racing Bulls looked back on a busy qualifying session of the DutchGP.

“The first qualifying runs from both drivers were below our expectations in terms of lap times, but the second ones were better. With some small changes to the aero balance and set-up, we made a step forward in the balance of Yuki’s car for Q2, which allowed him to get more out of the tyres. But even with this step and with a very strong last lap, we missed just over 0.1s in the last corners. It was an incredibly full Q2 session. We will of course see if another step in the direction we took for Q2 could have helped, because every little detail matters when the lap times in qualifying are so close together. Looking ahead to Sunday, the pace in the long runs of FP2 was reasonable, so if we can get our cars to the front early on the cars in front of us, we should be able to to drive at the front of the midfield and seize every opportunity that arises.”
