The United States plans to present a “major package of sanctions” once morest Russia on Friday following the death of the opposition leader Alexei Navalnysaid the White House.
“By order of President Biden, “We will announce on Friday of this week a significant package of sanctions to hold Russia accountable for what happened to Mr. Navalny,” White House spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Tuesday.
Kirby noted that he might not anticipate specific financial sanctions, but said the package was designed to continue holding the Russian president accountable, Vladimir Putin, of “two years of war in Ukraine” and that it would be “specifically complemented by additional sanctions in relation to the death of Mr. Navalny.”
Elon Musk’s social network X suspended the account of Alexei Navalni’s widow
The American president, Joe Biden said that Putin was responsible for Navalni’s death —47 years old and an open opponent of the Russian leader—, who had been imprisoned in the Arctic. In 2021, Biden said that he had warned Putin during a summit in Geneva regarding the significant consequences he would face if Navalny died in prison.
The US has already imposed Major sanctions affecting large sectors of the Russian economy already high authorities following the invasion of Ukraine, so it is not clear whether the new measures will have a practical effect for Moscow.
Distrust in Russian investigations
Kirby said that The US embassy in Russia is working to call for “full transparency” to the authorities of that country regarding the specific cause of Navalni’s death. However, he expressed little confidence that Washington can establish it.
“Without leaving aside the fact that, regardless of the actual scientific answer, Mr. Putin is responsible for it. But in the absence of a credible investigation into his death, “It’s hard to get to a point where we can just trust the word of the Russians.”Kirby said.
