According to Archyde.com, the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union issued simultaneous statements yesterday (10), accusing Russia of maliciously destroying the satellite network service of the American communications company Viasat an hour before the attack on Ukraine on 2/24. The UK noted that the attack affected internet users and wind farms in Central Europe, in addition to the Ukrainian military and some civilian customers.
EU member states and their international partners strongly condemn Russia’s malicious cyber attacks on Ukraine, which targeted the KA-SAT satellite network operated by Viasat, the EU said. Although the main target of the attack was the Ukrainian military, which relies on satellite communications, the 2/24 attack affected the network services of thousands of Viasat customers in Ukraine and tens of thousands of customers in Europe, and the attack also damaged tens of thousands of unauthorized Repaired satellite terminal, Russia should be responsible for this incident.
The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre said in its own statement that Russia’s military was almost certainly behind the breach of Ukrainian government websites in January and the deployment of the destructive WhisperGate malware ahead of the intrusion. The United States has also observed the deployment of malware by the Russian cyber military on Ukrainian government and private sector networks.
So far, the Viasat cyberattack remains unresolved, and it has shipped nearly 30,000 routers to customers to bring them back online. The EU added that they were considering further measures to prevent such malicious acts from happening once more.
