United States – Internal government documents obtained by the American CBS News network revealed that the administration of President Joe Biden is “considering receiving some Palestinians from the Gaza Strip as refugees in the United States.”
The documents showed that senior officials in several US federal agencies “discussed, in recent weeks, the practical application of various options for resettling Palestinians from Gaza who have family relationships with US citizens or permanent residents.”
One of these proposals includes “using the decades-old US refugee admissions program to receive Palestinians with ties to the United States who managed to flee Gaza and enter Egypt,” according to interagency planning documents.
The documents stated that senior American officials “also discussed removing more Palestinians from Gaza and treating them as refugees, if they have American relatives,” explaining that these plans would require “coordination with Egypt, which has so far refused to receive large numbers of Gazans.”
According to CBS News, those eligible to travel to the United States as refugees “will undergo a series of eligibility checks, medical and security checks, and will be provided with permanent residency, resettlement benefits such as housing assistance, and a path to U.S. citizenship.”
In a statement to CBS News, a White House spokesman said that the United States “helped more than 1,800 American citizens and their families leave the Gaza Strip, many of whom have moved to the United States.”
He added, “Based on President Biden’s directives, we will continue to help some particularly vulnerable individuals, such as children with serious health problems and children who were receiving treatment for cancer, to keep them out of harm’s way and to receive care in nearby hospitals in the area.”
He stressed that the United States “categorically rejects any measures that lead to the forced transfer of Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank or the redrawing of Gaza’s borders, and that the best way forward is to achieve a permanent ceasefire from a deal to release the hostages, which will stabilize the situation and pave the way.” For a two-state solution.”
