Sotheby’s to auction off a 161 million-year-old Stegosaurus skeleton in its most complete state, expected to fetch between $4 million and $6 million.

On July 11, 2024, Sotheby’s auction house in New York City, USA, displayed the most complete Stegosaurus skeleton before its official auction on July 17. It is expected to fetch an auction price of approximately $4-6 million USD.

Cassandra Hutton, Sotheby’s head of science and pop culture, said the skeleton, named “Apex,” is almost 161 million years old, stands 11 feet tall, and is regarding 27 feet long from tail to nose. Sotheby’s has been involved in the entire project, from its discovery in May 2022 in Moffat County, Colorado, through excavation, restoration, preparation, and installation. It is regarding 79% complete.

The Stegosaurus is a member of the armored dinosaur group called Thyreophorans, with a distinctive shape and arrangement of skin armor on its back, from the neck to the tail. It is one of the three most recognizable and popular dinosaurs of the Jurassic period.
