Guzmán, who was arrested in January in a military operation in which at least 29 people died, among them criminals and members of the security forces. It is one of the main objectives of the US government for its role in the transfer of drugs to the country.

He was charged in that nation with conspiracy to trafficking cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine. According to the State Department, he oversaw synthetic drug laboratories in Sinaloa, capable of producing between 3,000 to 5,000 pounds of the product per month.
To Guzmán, a member of the group “Los Chapitos”, a name alluding to his father’s nickname, he is also credited with ordering multiple assassinations, including that of a popular Mexican singer who reportedly refused to perform at his wedding.
Increasing flows of fentanyl into the United States, a drug that has caused record overdose deaths, have increased pressure to capture him.
