The United States affirms the support of Egypt and its people in striving for a prosperous future

And the US State Department stated, in a document of facts it published on its website on the occasion of the passage of more than a century of diplomatic cooperation and friendship between the two countries, today, Sunday, that the United States and Egypt are cooperating closely to defuse conflicts and promote sustainable peace, including through support for United Nations mediation to assist. To hold elections in Libya as soon as possible, and to restore a civilian-led democratic transition in Sudan through the Political Framework Agreement.

She added that Washington and Cairo share an unwavering commitment to a negotiated two-state solution as the only path to a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and equal measures of security, prosperity, and dignity for Israelis and Palestinians.

In the document, the US State Department confirmed its engagement with Egypt, as well as Sudan and Ethiopia, to reach a quick diplomatic decision regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which protects the interests of the three parties.

She noted that there is a shared commitment between the United States and Egypt to enhance bilateral economic cooperation for the mutual benefit of the two peoples, including through expanded trade, increased private sector investment, and cooperation in clean energy and climate technology.

According to the State Department document, as Egypt continues to grapple with the global repercussions of the Russia-Ukraine crisis and resulting food insecurity, the United States commends Egypt for concluding an agreement with the International Monetary Fund on December 16, 2022 as crucial to stabilizing its economy and enabling vital reforms.

The US State Department stated that the United States and Egypt committed themselves to establishing a joint economic committee that would enhance cooperation in all economic and trade issues.

Within the framework of developing relations between the two peoples, the US State Department said that more than 20,000 Egyptians have participated in US government exchange programs, and 450 Egyptians travel to the US annually in professional and academic exchange programs facilitated by the US Embassy in Cairo.

Turning to addressing the climate crisis, the United States welcomed Egypt’s continued leadership through the COP27 presidency to accelerate global ambition and action to address the climate crisis.

The US State Department added that the United States and Egypt support strengthening the “Global Pledge on Methane” and the “New Energy Path”, which Egypt joined to address methane leakage from the oil and gas sector.

The United States and Egypt co-lead the new Partnership on Adaptation in Africa that focuses on concrete initiatives to help build resilience in a changing climate.

The United States is providing $10 million to support the launch of the Cairo Center for Learning and Excellence in Adaptation and Resilience, which will build resilience across Africa. At COP27, the United States and Germany announced the allocation of more than $250 million to accelerate the pace of Egypt’s energy transition by supporting the deployment of 10 gigawatts of wind and solar projects with the shutdown of 5 gigawatts of inefficient natural gas generation.

The US State Department affirmed that Egypt is an important partner in combating terrorism, combating human trafficking and regional security operations, which enhance US and Egyptian security, and the decades-old defense partnership is a pillar of regional stability.

And the US State Department recalled that the United States and Egypt established diplomatic relations in 1922 in a letter addressed by President Warren G. Harding to King Ahmed Fouad, and over the past century, this deep partnership has proven its flexibility in the face of changing circumstances as Egypt seeks to build a stable and prosperous future that advances rights and fundamental freedoms for all citizens.

The State Department concluded the fact sheet by saying that the United States firmly believes that important partnerships such as the relationship between the United States and Egypt are stronger when there is a shared commitment to human rights.
