Why are there so many people in Taiwan who are “pro-Japanese”? Journalist Tsuyoshi Nojima says, “It’s not just because I was impressed by the politeness and deliciousness of the food at the destination.Compared to the United States or China, it’s important that there are no “conflicts of interest” involved.”

Taiwan’s affinity for Japan is a “hamburger structure”

Japanese people say that Taiwan is a “pro-Japanese country.” It is true that Taiwanese society has close feelings towards Japan. However, it is also a relationship fraught with complications that cannot be resolved with just that. From here, I would like to explain the relationship between Japan and Taiwan. I would like to take this opportunity to talk regarding how Taiwanese people feel regarding Japan, including my experience living in Taiwan as a newspaper reporter.

I have often said that Taiwan’s affinity for Japan is based on a hamburger structure. Until regarding 10 years ago.

People born and educated during the Japanese colonial period had a kinesthetic affinity for Japan. language, customs, and values. I spent my childhood filled with Japanese colors. “Japan” has completely settled in our hearts, and we want to affirm it rather than deny it – that’s what it means to be human.

“Overseas travel” to Japan, which is close to Japan, has increased.

After Japan abandoned Taiwan, Chinese-style education was implemented. However, there was deep-rooted dissatisfaction with the Kuomintang government, which ruled even more coercively than Japan, and Japan never disappeared from their hearts. They are the first generation of Japanophiles, and this is the part of the bread on the top of the hamburger.

The people on the bottom are people who lived in a society that became more open in the 1990s and were showered with Japanese culture, making it the center of entertainment.

Additionally, as the economy has stabilized in Taiwan, over the past 20 years or so, a lifestyle of traveling on holidays has taken root. Initially, domestic travel was the mainstream, but due to the small size of the country and its relatively high prices, people began to look for travel destinations outside of the country.

First, there will be an increase in travel to mainland China, and then to Japan, which is close by. This trend has become noticeable since 2012, and at its peak in 2019, approximately 4.89 million Taiwanese visited Japan (Japan National Tourism Organization = JNTO)Number of foreign visitors to Japan by nationality/month“Than). Since the Tsai Ing-wen administration, China has restricted the number of tourists to Taiwan, and as a result, Taiwan now boasts an approximately 30% market share as a destination for Taiwanese people, more than China excluding Hong Kong and Macau.

The more people go to Japan, the more they feel a sense of kinship with Japan. The cleanliness of Japan, the politeness of the Japanese people, the deliciousness of the food, the quality of the hot springs, the beauty of the cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. Taiwanese people are constantly praising Japan. They are currently under the age of 50 and have a different sense of favorability toward Japan than the first generation.
