The main unions are circulating a manifesto demanding the immediate release of Jean-Rémy Yama, president of Dynamique Unitaire, the largest trade union center for Gabonese civil servants. Jean-Rémy Yama has been in preventive detention for 5 months for fraud and breach of trust. His comrades denounce a political affair and demand his release for medical reasons.

The authors of the manifesto demand “ the immediate release of Jean-Rémy Yama and his emergency medical care “. The president of the largest trade union center in Gabon was arrested at Libreville airport on February 27 when he was traveling to Senegal to calibrate his breathing apparatus which he is wearing following an apnea.

The manifest states that the device is down. His health is deteriorating and his life is therefore in danger.

The document also claims that Yama is the victim of what its signatories call a “ politico-legal strategy aimed at eliminating it “. They denounce his removal from the public service a month following his imprisonment and the refusal of the judicial authorities to grant him provisional release for health reasons.

The authors of the manifesto intend to make their voice heard by international bodies such as the European Union, the African Union and the African Commission on Human Rights.

Professor at Omar Bongo University, Jean-Rémy Yama has been in pre-trial detention in Libreville central prison since March 2 for breach of trust and fraud. He is accused of having embezzled money from a real estate project planned to provide decent accommodation for university teachers. He was co-managing the project with other colleagues who were never bothered.

Several political leaders, including Jean Ping, have already signed the manifesto.
