The European Cup is a major source of income for the top clubs in our championship. Union Saint-Gilloise pocketed 12 million euros in bonuses last season and will have difficulty beating this record, but going through the rounds can quickly put a damper on things.
12 million euros in bonuses paid by UEFA is the amount pocketed by Union Saint-Gilloise for its European Cup campaign last season. Quarter-finalist in the Europa League, RUSG is, this time, transferred to the Conference League and will pocket less.
According to the calculations of our colleagues at the futurethe leader of the championship would have already pocketed an amount of around 8 million euros for its qualification in the 1/16 finals of the competition and its start to the campaign (only €300,000 was paid to the Union for its second place in the group, the rest of the amount representing a starting bonus, coefficient, and results).
The Union must reach the last four to achieve the same performance
By joining the 1/8 finals to the detriment of Frankfurt, the Union might glean an additional €600,000. One million euros can be recovered by reaching the quarter-finals and two million euros in the event of qualification for the semi-finals. The team beaten in the final will take an additional three million euros, while a sum of five million euros is planned for the winner.
To reach its total of 12 million euros, the Union will therefore have to reach the last four. €3.6 million in qualification bonuses would then be paid, not including income linked to victories and shares. The Conference League is not the Europa League, but it might also inflate the accounts at Parc Duden.
