After a fall on his shoulder, Mark Cavendish has to prematurely end his last Tour de France without the 35th stage win.
Mark Cavendish’s farewell performance at the Tour de France does not have a happy ending. The sprinter fell on the 8th stage around 64 km before the finish on his right shoulder and had to leave the race in the ambulance with a suspected broken collarbone. This means that the 38-year-old will not achieve the sole stage record.
Cavendish had competed in the 110th Tour de France in order to become the sole record holder of the Tour of France with his 35th stage win. He shares the record with Belgian cycling icon Eddy Merckx. On Friday, Cavendish narrowly missed the record as second in Bordeaux. The Brit ends his career at the end of the season.
