“The Undervaluing of Writing in Game Development: A Look into BioWare’s Treatment of Writers”

The veteran creator of role-playing games such as Dragon Age Inquisition and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, David Gaider said that BioWare has “become” a company that “quietly resents” its writers. Gaider, who has been a studio writer for a long time and worked on the entire Dragon Age series, complained that writing as a skill is grossly undervalued these days.

“Writing is one of those disciplines that is constantly underestimated. Even among developers, there is an opinion that if you don’t have any real skills, you can’t draw or program, then you will become a writer. It’s like writing a script for a game doesn’t require any real skill.” shared Gayder.

After that, the developer also discussed his experience at BioWare and lamented that even the studio itself, which became famous for its great stories and built its success on the reputation of good writers, gradually turned into a company that considers scriptwriters to be ballast: “This is what I clearly felt in 2016 year – I was not a specialist who needs support and priority.

BioWare is currently working on Dragon Age 4, which is already subtitled Dreadwolf, and is also discreetly hinting at the development of a Mass Effect sequel. At first, there were rumors that the new open-world game would be multiplayer, but it was later confirmed that publisher EA had dropped the idea. Dragon Age 4 is supposed to let us explore completely new regions of Thedas and clash with Solas, who turns out to be an elven god.
