“The Undervaluing of Screenwriters in the Video Game Industry: A Look at BioWare’s Mistakes”

BioWare did not value screenwriters and underpaid them because they did not see the need to invest in this part of game production. David Gaider, former head writer of the Dragon Age series, spoke regarding this.

According to Gaider, at some point BioWare, which focused on story games, began to see the writers as a burden that hindered production. The studio began to focus more on other aspects, such as the technical component, and cut the work of screenwriters, as well as their salaries.

Gaider noted that a similar trend is observed in the video game industry in general. This is due to the fact that people consider scripting an easy job that does not require effort and a normal salary. At the same time, people who claim to love good stories are not ready to invest resources in relevant specialists, which leads to a drop in quality.

Gaider joined BioWare in 1999 and left in 2016 following 17 years with the company. In addition to the Dragon Age series, he was responsible for the creation Baldur’s Gate 2, Neverwiter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Later, he created his own company Summerfall Studios, which is working on Stray Gods, a mixture of RPG and musical. The release of the game is scheduled for August 3rd.
