The uncle of Queen Mathilde, Raoul d’Udekem d’Acoz, has passed away.

Raoul d’Udekem d’Acoz, who was the uncle of Queen Mathilde, passed away at the age of 87 on Saturday, as confirmed by the mayor of Herne, Kris Poelaert. Born on April 21, 1935 in Uccle, Raoul settled in Herne, Flemish Brabant in the 90s. He served as CD&V alderman in Herne from 2001 to 2007 and became an honorary alderman in 2014. In the same year, he drew the list of the Vlaamse Christen Partij for the regional elections. Raoul was also a municipal councilor for 24 years in Ypres, where he lived for many years. Details of his funeral are not yet known. The mayor of Herne praised Raoul’s town involvement and positive contribution towards its image. A Twitter user, Geert Janssens, expressed his condolences and shared a tribute for Raoul d’Udekem d’Acoz on social media.

“Raoul d’Udekem d’Acoz has always been very involved in the town”and emphasized Kris Poelaert. “His title of honorary alderman was a mark of gratitude for his contribution to the positive image of Herne.”

The queen’s uncle had also lived in Ypres for many years. There too, he had devoted himself to local politics by being a municipal councilor for 24 years.

Details of his funeral are unknown at this time.
