The UN lowers the number of women and children killed in Gaza

In its daily update May 6 The UN emergency aid office OCHA stated that 34,735 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, among them over 9,500 women and over 14,500 children.

Two days later, 8 May OCHA published figures showing that 34,844 people have been killed in the war so far, among them 4,959 women and 7,797 children.

Beneath the figures, the UN has published a footnote stating that “The UN has so far been unable to present independent, complete and verified figures on the number of people killed. The figures available have been obtained by the Ministry of Health or the government’s press office in Gaza and by the Israeli authorities and await further verification”.

The UN’s downward adjustment raises questions regarding the accuracy of the figures that the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip’s Ministry of Health has stated, writes the newspaper.

In March, the head of Unicef, Catherine Russell, referred to figures from Gaza’s health authorities, which said that over 13,000 children had been killed since October 7, as “#an astronomically horrific figure”.

Jerusalem Post writes that prominent statisticians have for several months criticized figures presented by the Gaza authorities, and that statisticians believe the figures cannot be accurate.
