The UN reported this Friday that it has increased the funds it seeks with its action plan to 78.3 million dollars (75 million euros) for the extensive damage recently caused in Cuba by two hurricanes, two earthquakes and a new collapse of the system. national electric.
In principle, the initiative proposed by the United Nations focused on mobilizing up to 33 million dollars (30.5 million euros) to respond to the damage left by Hurricane Oscar after its passage on October 20 in the extreme northeast of Cuba. .
In its update of the action plan in response to the disasters that occurred on the island, the UN explains that it has incorporated Hurricane Rafael – which impacted the western area on November 6 – and the two earthquakes of magnitude 6 and 6.7 recorded four days later in the southeast of the island.
In this sense, it indicates that the objective is to seek 78.3 million dollars to support nearly 930,000 people in their most urgent and recovery needs after being harmed by these meteorological and seismic events.
It also emphasizes that in less than a month the Caribbean country has been hit by three disasters of diverse nature, which impacted different regions, generating complex effects in key sectors for the well-being of the population, their livelihoods and socio-economic development. in seven provinces and 17 municipalities in the country.
The original plan was developed in collaboration with Cuban authorities, with priority for the sectors of water, sanitation and hygiene, temporary shelters, housing and early recovery, education, logistics, health, food security and nutrition.
The stated purpose is to contribute to efforts to “meet the urgent needs” of the victims, “reactivate the vitality of basic services” and “move towards the recovery of the territories and the livelihoods of their inhabitants.”
Altogether, the damages recorded in these disasters – according to official data – include more than 34,000 homes, 37,000 hectares of agricultural production and a group of facilities in that sector, as well as severe damage to electricity, water and water services. communications.
