The UN General Assembly is holding a meeting on the situation in the Gaza Strip

The spokesperson of the President of the UN General Assembly indicated that the representatives of Egypt and Mauritania are calling an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday.

According to diplomatic sources, the UN General Assembly could vote on the text of a resolution calling for a ceasefire at this meeting. Resolutions adopted by this UN body are not binding.

The draft text, seen by the AFP news agency, largely follows the wording of the UN Security Council resolution, which was vetoed by the US on Friday. It expresses grave concern about the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave.

The resolution also calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the release of the hostages.

Washington blocked a cease-fire resolution on Friday. Its adoption came after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called an emergency meeting of the Security Council using the rarely used Article 99 of the Charter.

According to this article, the Secretary-General may bring to the attention of the Council “any matter which he considers likely to threaten the maintenance of international peace and security”.

According to A. Guterres, the delayed response to the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas has severely damaged the authority and credibility of the UN.

In late October, the General Assembly called on Israel and the militant group for an “immediate, lasting and robust humanitarian ceasefire and cessation of hostilities” in another resolution.

Two weeks later, the Security Council broke its silence on the war and called for “longer recesses and humanitarian corridors”. But it was worded more gracefully than the wording calling for a cease-fire or a cease-fire.
