The UN expresses concern about the number of arbitrary arrests in Venezuela

This Tuesday the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN), Volker Türk.said he was very concerned about the large number of “arbitrary detentions“that have been generated in Venezuela, in addition to the disproportionate”use of force“that have been used by military security forces to feed”the climate of fear”, following the presidential elections on July 28.

Likewise Türk, He urged the authorities not to adopt these or other laws that end up undermining the country’s civic and democratic space..

Also the UN human rights chief, He urged the release of all persons who have been arbitrarily detained.also demanding that their judicial guarantees be respected in the proceedings.

He indicated that he has received information that authorities linked to the administration of Nicolás Maduro have taken on the task of annulling the passports of some people as a possible reprisal for the work they carry out.

Türk’s statement comes just one day after Maduro called on the powers of the State to act with a “heavy hand” following the protests that took place in Venezuela following his questionable victory.

He also stated that in most of the cases that have been documented by the High Commissioner, Detainees were not allowed to appoint a lawyer of their choice nor have contact with their families.

«Some of these cases would constitute forced disappearances.«, part of the statement reads.

The High Commissioner also said that there are reports of acts of violence against public officials and buildings by some protesters.

«Violence is never the answer«he stressed.

Türk also expressed concern about the possible adoption of a bill on surveillance and financing of NGOs, as well as a bill on “against fascism, neo-fascism and similar expressions«.
