The United Nations (UN) spokesperson, Sthéphane Dujarric, addressed the migration crisis that has deepened this week in the border area between Chile and Peru.
Hundreds of migrants -mainly Venezuelans- are stranded at the Chacalluta pass, in the Arica commune, unable to enter Tacna because they do not have their documentation up to date.
Sthéphane Dujarric held that “What is really critical is that the two countries face this problem with dialogue and have the well-being of human beings at the center of their concerns, whether they are migrants or refugees.”
In addition, he stated that Various organizations are “concerned” by the people who are facing this situation and maintained that “in many cases they lack shelter, water, food and sanitary services.”
Along these lines, he stated that “the dignity (of migrants) must be respected, as well as your rights as refugees, and we will be there to ensure that your most basic needs are met; but this is a matter that must be dealt with directly between the two countries”.
This Thursday the Chilean Foreign Ministry summoned the Peruvian ambassador to the country, Jaime Pomareda, to present a diplomatic note, tFollowing the statements of the mayor of Tacna, Pascal Güisa Bravo, in the context of the complex migratory situation.
Subsequently, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Chilean ambassador in Lima, Óscar Fuentes, “to express his protest” following the situation that is occurring on the borders between the two countries.
