National efforts to promote the argan sector and develop its ecosystem were presented by Brahim Hafidi, CEO of Andzoa.
Debates: The argan tree celebrates its international day with great fanfare. Indeed, the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests and the Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations organized on May 10, 2023 the celebration of the Day Argan International at the UN headquarters in New York.
The International Argan Day celebrated at the UN was marked by the opening remarks, from Morocco, by Mohamed Sadiki, Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Waters and Forests . For his part, Omar Hilale, Ambassador Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations, chaired the exchanges and debates which saw the participation of UN speakers as well as several international organizations.
“Become a tradition since 2021 and adopted by consensus at the United Nations General Assembly. The Kingdom of Morocco, where argan trees have existed for centuries, combines agricultural biodiversity, resilient ecosystems and valuable cultural heritage. It is for this reason that it has been recognized and protected by various United Nations entities”, explains the Ministry of Agriculture in a press release. And to add: “May 10 is an opportunity to highlight Morocco’s efforts to promote the argan tree as an endemic tree of the Kingdom and as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity and an ancestral source of sustainable development. and resilient”.
For the ministry, this high-level event highlights the role of the argan tree in strengthening the resilience of communities, its contribution to food security (SDG 2) and adaptation to climate change (SDG 13) and to water stress (SDG6) and its importance in empowering rural women (SDG 5), through the support and promotion of agricultural cooperatives and organizations (SDG8).
During this day, national efforts to promote the argan tree sector and the development of its ecosystem were presented by Brahim Hafidi, general manager of Andzoa, under the theme “The argan tree: symbol of resilience and of local development”, followed by the inauguration of an artistic and photographic exhibition around the argan tree. This takes place from May 10 to 25 at the UN headquarters in New York.
