If you’re around teenagers, you’ve probably heard expressions like “wesh” or “it’s square“. But what do they mean exactly?
In an attempt to enlighten the most curious, young people aged 13 to 18 from the Institut Sainte-Famille in Virton had a fairly daring and original idea. Indeed, to capture the attention of his students, Miguel Da Silva, French teacher, suggested that they develop a dictionary with their expressions.
“By hearing this kind of expressions, instead of hitting the nail on the head and punishing the students, the idea was to take the problem in the other direction and allow them to express themselves in a register which totally belongs to them“, he explains. Note that this dictionary already contains 275 words.
But why do they use them? Amélie, co-editor of the “dictionnaire de ouf”, explains: “Because it’s funny and adults don’t always understand what we say. And also because it’s our usual youth language“.
Already accessible online, this dictionary will perhaps soon also be available in paper version.
