Lions and tigers are the two top predators in their food chain. As big cats, lions and tigers are dangerous mammal species and subspecies.

Top predators between lions and tigers have different habitats and characteristics. Lions and tigers usually do not live in the same territory. Even though they have overlapping home ranges, they rarely live in the same habitat.

The main difference between the two big cats is clearly visible in their appearance. In general, tigers are burnt orange with black stripes while lions are sandy brown with faint, darker spots.

One of the largest tigers of its subspecies is the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica). What would happen if a Siberian tiger migrated to the African Savanna region and fought with the lion, the King of the Jungle?

This question can be tested through several differences between tigers and lions. What is the deciding factor? Which one will dominate in the fight? Read the explanation.

Difference between Tiger and Lion

According to Heather Ross of AZ Animals, there are differences between the two big cats lions and tigers. These differences can be a consideration in determining who wins between the tiger or the lion. This distinction will focus on two species, namely the African lion (Panthera leo) and the Siberian tiger.

In terms of pattern and color, it is the easiest way to differentiate between lions and tigers. Tigers have a striped pattern with orange or white with black stripes. Meanwhile, lions tend to be solid colored and have brown, gold or yellowish fur.

Another physical form in terms of length and weight. Generally, Siberian tigers are larger than lions. Tigers are almost twice as long as male lions are regarding 7-8 feet long while male tigers have a maximum height of almost 13 feet. Then, the weight of a male tiger can reach 350 kg while a male lion is around 250 kg.

Regarding their attacking ability, lions are known as very dangerous animals. The speed and strength of this animal is deadly. Lions can use their sharp claws to injure their enemies, powerful “punches”, and bite their prey to death. Lions have a biting force of between 650 and 1,000 Psi, enough to break bones.

The Siberian tiger has similar abilities. They have sharp claws measuring 10 cm and the ability to bite prey with canine teeth measuring 7.5 cm with a force of 1,000 Psi. This animal also prefers to bite the neck of its prey to strangle it or simply bite the head to kill instantly.

In terms of range, most of the lion’s range is in Africa and most of the tiger’s range is in Asia. Apart from that, in terms of socialization, lions tend to live in groups and hunt together. In contrast, tigers are generally solitary. Young tigers can establish their own territories as they approach adulthood.

However, according to Kyle Glatz, the determining factor in a fight between a tiger and a lion is size, speed, defense, attacking power and predatory behavior. Lions and tigers apparently have the same speed, defense, attacking power. Meanwhile, in terms of size, it is known that tigers are superior in weight and length to lions.

Another interesting thing is known from its predatory behavior. Lions will attack opponents in groups. Meanwhile, tigers are ambush predators that almost always hunt alone. Both animals have strong predatory behavior, but tigers can be more deadly when alone.

Who is Stronger Between the Lion and the Tiger?

As two big cats, the general question that often crosses our minds is who will win when a lion fights a tiger. The answer is that Siberian tigers have the potential to win a fight once morest lions.

Launching from the page AZ Animals on (13/10/2023), simply put, Siberian tigers are bigger and stronger than lions. Even though both have similar body attributes, tigers have superior attack and attack power than lions.

Most fights between lions and tigers occur in captivity. One incident of conflict between a lion and a tiger was at the Ankara Zoo in 2010. The incident occurred when a tiger entered the lion’s enclosure. The fight ended with a tiger slash that cut the lion’s neck.

However, it is important to remember that the incident occurred in captivity, not the wild. In fact, in natural conditions, tigers tend to live alone and lions live in groups. In one coalition group consisting of six male lions, it is nicknamed the mapogo lion coalition.

The group is in South Africa and controls around 170,000 hectares of land. Additionally, the coalition was able to kill more than 100 of its rivals before they died. This can lead to much different results when a fight between a lion and a tiger takes place in the wild.
