The Ultimate Party Bubbles: A Comparative Consumer Test of the Best Sparkling Wines for End-of-Year Celebrations

2023-12-23 10:46:00

New episode of our consumer test series. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the six supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl, Intermarché and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands to “white products” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of twenty points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality-ratio. price. The consumer test goes into end-of-year party mode, and we end this special week with the bubbles. Last year, Lidl’s Spumante Valdobbiadene prosecco won. As with red wine, each major brand played the game by offering us a bottle between €5 and €10.

(Version 2022) The big test of brands in party mode: the best bubbles for sparkling parties (COMPARATIVE)

Aspect of the packaging: we start with Aldi, which offers a bottle of Ballaturi brut prosecco. The black and gold label was quite classy and ideal for this holiday season. For Delhaize, we tasted an Oro de Cava. The gold and azure label was very pretty and modern. On the Colruyt side, we were treated to a Luxembourgish champagne method: Comte de Bredimus brut. The label couldn’t be more classic, a little too much to stand out from the crowd. For Lidl, we discovered a Crémant de Loire with a pretty label that fits well with the holidays. For Carrefour, we liked the modernity of the Casa Farive Prosecco bottle. In the aisle, it was very easy to find, in fact. Finally, it was much simpler, but successful for the prosecco from the “expert club” range from Intermarché.

Appearance of the product: for Aldi, we liked the fairly flowery nose, neither too lively nor too alcoholic. Very accessible for the greatest number of people. On the Delhaize side, we found notes of violets on the nose. Quite pleasant, with a nice, very fine bubble. For the bubbles offered by Colruyt, we moved upmarket again, with a nose reminiscent of real champagne and fine bubbles. It was much less fine, very clear and not very sparkling for the Crémant de Loire from Lidl. The nose was extremely sour, really unpleasant. It was a little better, but not incredible on the Intermarché side either, with a very light nose. It was similar, but a little better for the Carrefour bottle.

Nutritional value: when we talk about alcohol, we cannot give more than a presence rating.

The big test of brands in end-of-year holiday mode: the best red wines for less than €10 per bottle (COMPARATIVE)

Label readability: This was very disappointing overall. There was only minimal information about the product, no explanation about manufacturing, field, etc. Damage. The only exception: Intermarché with lots of information related to this “expert club” range.

Taste: we start with the Aldi prosecco, which was very light, much too light in fact. Served chilled, it’s okay, but it’s treacherous if you cut it one after the other. The cava offered by Delhaize was already a little better than the prosecco from Aldi, but it was still too light. For Colruyt, the good impressions on the nose were confirmed when tasting the product. It already had much more body and, therefore, taste. As for Lidl, it was really at a much lower level than the rest. Most testers didn’t even finish their drink. For Intermarché, it wasn’t bad, but it really lacked taste. A fairly ordinary product. Finally, Carrefour ranks second in the ranking, but far behind Colruyt.

The big brand test: for shrimp croquettes, just one reference is really worth it (COMPARATIVE)

Value for money: Delhaize (€11.99) and Carrefour (€10.99) offered a bottle for just over €10, which is slightly penalized. The cheapest bottle, Colruyt, is the best: €6.09. For the rest, we find Lidl (€7.99), Aldi (€8.49) and Intermarché (€8.99).
