The Ultimate Guide to the 2024 Solar Eclipse: How to Watch and What to Expect

One of the most important astronomical events of 2024 is approaching. On April 8, the Earth will witness a solar eclipse in which the Sun will be the protagonist. NASA, as an entity that studies the Universe, that day will be in charge of the task of sharing the eclipse with global citizens, since not all countries can see it.

For this, NASA is already preparing everything for the live transmission of the natural phenomenon. In this case, only citizens of some American countries will be able to observe the eclipse in person and without the need for a screen. The lucky ones this time are Mexico, the United States and Canada. The rest of the countries in the world will have to enjoy the event through NASA’s transmission.

What is an eclipse?

NASA has spoken out on this matter and has made it clear that an eclipse is a phenomenon that occurs “when a planet or moon gets in the way of the Sun’s light. Here on Earth, we can experience two types of eclipses. : solar eclipses and lunar eclipses.”

Eclipse solar:

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon interrupts the light of the Sun and consequently the shadow of this satellite is projected on the Earth. In this way, when it is daytime and this type of eclipse occurs for a couple of minutes, it becomes dark.

Likewise, according to NASA, there are two types of solar eclipses. One total and one partial. The solar eclipse occurs almost every year and a half. However, partial eclipses, which are when the Moon covers a percentage of the Sun, occur regarding twice each year.

Furthermore, when solar eclipses occur they can only be observed from one part of the Earth, which is the area where it is daytime at that time. “On average, a solar eclipse can be seen from the same place on Earth for only a few minutes, approximately every 375 years,” NASA added.

Eclipse Manager:

Unlike the solar eclipse, in lunar eclipses the Earth is responsible for preventing the passage of light from the Sun to the moon. “This means that at night, the full Moon disappears completely, as the Earth’s shadow covers it,” explains NASA.

Additionally, in this event the moon can be seen completely reddish, “because the Earth’s atmosphere absorbs the other colors while some sunlight is bent towards the Moon. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon’s brightness comes from all the sunrises and sunsets that occur on Earth.”

At what time and how to see it from Colombia?

To see the solar eclipse on April 8, citizens residing in Mexico, Canada and the United States will be able to go out into the streets to observe it with proper protection (special glasses). However, the rest of the countries will be able to see this eclipse from the NASA page by clicking here.

That day NASA will have an expert who will be explaining the phenomenon. But the scientist will also answer the questions that citizens have sent to the entity.

The broadcast time in Colombia will be at 12:30 PM. However, in Mexico the phenomenon will begin around 11:00 in the morning.
