Should we therefore completely ban bamboo from a garden? For Jean Vastrade, a nurseryman specializing in bamboo near Waterloo, the answer is no. In his one-hectare nursery, he cultivates nearly 70 varieties of bamboo. “The enormous advantage of bamboo is that it makes screens. It is the structure of the garden”, he comments.
But for Jean Vastrade, not all varieties of bamboo are suitable for all gardens: “You really have to see what you install where. That’s why it’s important to contact a specialist.” If you decide to plant them, you must also respect certain rules, he explains: “The installation of anti-rhizome barriers is imperative with phyllostachys bamboo. You must then check the perimeter every year to ensure that nothing passes over the barrier. Or you can plant a bamboo from the Fargesia family which is not streaky, which behaves like a grass and which remains green all year round.”
Another tip from the specialist to prevent the bamboo from going elsewhere: feed it. “To control it, we give it a lot of fertilizer, organic grass, it will stay there.”
