However, not all pastries are equal, as the UFC-Que Choisir survey revealed. Some breads are too salty, others are full of additives with unpronounceable names. Thus, four major French bakery brands were scrutinized: Marie-Blachère, Paul, La Mie Câline (organic) and Boulangerie Louise.

UFC-Que Choisir analyzed a wholemeal bread, a country bread and a white baguette in three stores of each brand, before examining the composition and nutritional quality of these products. The resulting ranking is as follows: Marie-Blachère obtained the best score for her white baguette, closely followed by La Mie Câline and Paul. On the other hand, the Louise bakery chain is not unanimous and should be avoided.

To help you choose your bakery, UFC-Que Choisir recommends favoring wholemeal flour breads, preferably organic, to avoid traces of pesticides. In fact, wholemeal flour preserves the entire wheat grain, including the bran and germ which are sources of fiber, vitamins and minerals.
