New episode of our consumer test series. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the six supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl, Intermarché and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands to “white products” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of twenty points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality-ratio. price. The consumer test goes into end-of-year party mode, and we continue with the frozen logs. Last year, we tested the pastry logs, we are switching to iced logs this year.
(Version 2022) The big test of brands in party mode: we have decided to designate the best log (COMPARATIVE)
Aspect of the packaging: we chose Ijsboerke as the reference brand. The packaging was attractive, with the words “log” clearly highlighted. The Belgian origin of the ice cream is also highlighted. It was a little less light for the Colruyt product, with the package a little too dark. On the Delhaize side, we found the box a little too full of information, and the product was therefore not highlighted enough. Lidl’s special holiday range was quite attractive too, but the product wasn’t highlighted enough, there was too much text. It was a little better at Aldi. For Carrefour and Intermarché, the product was well presented.
Appearance of the product: the Ijsboerke log melted very quickly, but was still appetizing. The color of the chocolate was perhaps a little too light. Completely coated in chocolate, we were curious to see the inside of the Colruyt log. It was okay, but it didn’t smell like chocolate enough for our taste. For Delhaize, it smelled strongly of chocolate and really made you want it. For Aldi, it was simple but successful. For Lidl it was also very simple but odorless. For Carrefour, it was quite successful and well-worked in terms of form. For Intermarché, the little extra was the melting chocolate heart.
The big brand test: for shrimp croquettes, just one reference is really worth it (COMPARATIVE)
Nutritional value: Nutri-Score D for everyone.
Readability of the label: it was very good, very clear for the big brand. Intermarché and Carrefour were at the same level. Very good too but a little less clear for Colruyt. For Lidl and Aldi, it was written too small, the table was too. For Delhaize, there was too much text.
Taste: for the big brand, it was very good. The quality of Ijsboerke ice cream no longer needs to be demonstrated, and we liked the very creamy side of the ice cream. Colruyt does quite well, in particular thanks to its meringue center which gives a little texture to the product. On the other hand, the ice cream lacked taste. It was a bit disgusting from Delhaize. It was also too sweet, a bit disappointing. For the Aldi log, it was also disappointing. It tasted like industrial ice cream, and we’re still looking for the taste of chocolate. It wasn’t amazing for Lidl either, but the chocolate still tasted better. The Carrefour log was good but lacked a little finesse. Finally, Intermarché is doing very well, with very good vanilla ice cream and a good texture thanks to the melting chocolate center.
The big test of brands in party mode: zakouski, a test for better and for worse (COMPARATIVE)
Value for money: for around a liter of frozen log, here are the prices in descending order: Colruyt (€12.92), Ijsboerke (€9.99), Delhaize (€8), Intermarché (€3.79) ), Carrefour (€3.49) and Lidl and Aldi (€2.49).
