Kostyuk faced Russian Elina Awanesian in the third round of the Australian Open. The Ukrainian defeated her opponent in two sets and continued playing. As fate would have it, in the next match she will face another tennis player with Russian origins. He will meet Marija Timofeeva on the court.
This will be another demanding match for her, not only in terms of the sports aspect. Kostyuk has been opposed to Russia’s actions from the beginning. It happened many times that she did not greet her Russian rivals. Now she decided to take advantage of the opportunity and… scolded the journalists. In her opinion, they do not pay due attention to the situation in Ukraine.
– I respect journalists, but there are some I really don’t like. I think they do not highlight the situation in Ukraine, they focus on reporting hot news. They want drama. They wanted news. They just wanted all the heat between the players, she said.
The athlete referred to the fact that she competes with Russian players. She once once more emphasized that in her opinion the Russians should be excluded from the game. – People (in Ukraine – ed.) are still dying every day. I still don’t understand what all these players are doing here. I feel like people forget regarding it because yes… people get used to it. Yes, unfortunately it is no longer breaking news, so journalists are not interested in it – she said, quoted by sportskeeda.com.
Kostiuk assures that he still intends to raise his voice on this matter. – I think I’m here to remind everyone that it’s still going on and it needs to be stopped, she concluded.
Russian tennis players do not compete in the Australian Open under their flag. As with other events, they start under a neutral flag.
