The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) approved the modification of the study plans in different careers, among which stand out Medicine and Engineering. This is a modification in the programs, which aims to shorten the years of study to prevent student dropout, as they explained.
Updating the academic training of students is part of a comprehensive plan of the University that ranges from Medicine to careers in Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering, Economics and Agricultural Administration.
In addition to shortening the duration of the course, these changes will allow create intermediate titles in some racess and modify the study plans to adapt them to the uses of new technologies.

According to the rector of the UBA, Ricardo Gelpithe objective is focused on expedite academic trajectories and confront student desertion, without losing academic quality.
“The idea that students can graduate with a degree and a quality educational experiencein less time, always prioritizing excellence in training and academic modernization”, mentioned Gelpi.
Changes in the medical career
With these modifications, the University brought the Medicine career, the one with the most currently enrolled, to a duration of six yearsmuch less than the seven and a half years that are currently being studied.
“The reform contemplates the shortening of the career in 1000 hourswhich translates into a reduction from one year to a year and a half in the course”, commented Luis Ignacio Brusco, dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
In addition, the modernization plan seeks “adapt to scientific and technological advances”ensuring that future professionals are prepared to meet the challenges of care in a constantly changing environment.

“The proposal introduces a more flexible approach, allowing students to choose rotations according to your interests and personal and professional goals; so that they adapt the training to their individual aspirations”, adds Brusco.
On the other hand, an attempt will also be made to involve “a focus on global health and community medicine”, in order to train students on global challenges and the importance of preventive medicine and health promotion.
Modifications in Engineering careers
In the cases of engineering careers, the vice dean of the Faculty, Raúl Bertero, explained that the changes will allow them to be carried out six years of studyincluding the basic cycle, which will reduce the duration by approximately one year.
The new study plan was reformulated to use various resources that speed up the course, since the first year of the degree was the one with the highest rate of appeals and dropouts.
Additionally, summer courses will be implemented with the support of virtual material in critical subjects for those students with difficulties and minimize the correlatives to ensure that the student has alternative paths in the development of his career.
“Due to the speed of technological changes, it was essential to face a modernization of the themes of each subjecta deepening of the engineering sciences and a use of the teachings left by the emergency distance education that the pandemic generated”, explained Bertero.
Time of hope for education?
The student who reaches approximately two years of the career, will receive a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Sciences which, in addition to recognition for the labor market, seeks to be a stimulus to advance to that level despite the initial difficulties.
All these reforms that were approved in the last session of the Superior Council of the UBA and are added to those already updated in different undergraduate and technical courses from other UBA Faculties such as Agronomy; Architecture, Design and Urbanism; Exact and Natural Sciences; Medical Sciences; Social Sciences; Pharmacy and Biochemistry; Engineering and Psychology.
