The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) launched the campaign “I VOTE” to promote citizen participation in the upcoming Primary, Open, Simultaneous and Mandatory elections (PASO) on Sunday, August 13. The campaign invites users of the social networks to upload a photo using the hashtag #YOVOTO for encourage more people to come out to vote.
“University not only train people in different disciplinesbut also performs actions that promote civic values. That is why, within this framework, we launched the #YOVOTO campaign”, explains Paula Quattrocchi, Secretary of Institutional Relations, Culture and Communication at the university.
The campaign is aimed at both the university community and the general public, and is carried out within the framework of the commemoration of 40 years of democracy uninterrupted in Argentina.
“Now, even, it makes a special sense. Because it was not always possible to vote. We wanted to give more importance to participation, that people understand that it is valuable to go and speak freely by voting. Regardless of whether you are angry at politics or for some other reason, vote for what you want, but vote”, added Quattrocchi.
The launch of this initiative also occurs in a national context of low voter turnout. Of the 17 provinces that elected governor in 2023, 15 had a fairly low level of turnout at the polls. In eight of those provinces, did not exceed 70% of the standard and the numbers became more worrying in two of the country’s most important districts. On the one hand, the STEP of Santa Fe and, on the other, the municipal elections in the city of Córdobabarely reaching 60% of the participation.
For this very reason, the electoral justice watch with concern the downward trend in electoral participation. Consequently, they await the results of the primary elections in August and evaluate measures that can stimulate voting ahead of the next general elections.
“In addition to having a lot of misinformation, many do not vote because they think their vote is worthless, which is not going to change things. It’s discouraging, that’s why with this initiative we wanted to motivate people to express themselves freely by voting”, concluded Paula Quattrocchi.
