The United Arab Emirates, represented by the National Authority for Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management, participated in the meeting of the fourth session of the Arab Coordination Mechanism for Disaster Risk Reduction, which was held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, in preparation for the first Arab ministerial meeting of ministers concerned with disaster risk reduction scheduled Tomorrow, Thursday, in Cairo.
The country was represented by Dr. Saif Juma Al Dhaheri, Director of Safety and Prevention Department at the authority, and Khaled Obaid Al Kaabi from the National Authority for Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management.
This session is being held in light of the great repercussions that the Arab region is facing from climatic and environmental changes and serious disasters that have contributed significantly to increasing desertification rates, forest fires, water scarcity, and other natural variables, in addition to humanitarian disasters such as armed conflicts that affected the Middle East and North Africa region, where The Arab region is among the regions most affected by these changes.
The three-day meeting will discuss a number of important and main items, including topics related to monitoring natural disasters, following up on the provisions of the Arab strategy for disaster risk reduction, preparing for the Seventh Global Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction, and defining Arab and regional emergency plans to reduce disaster risk.
A number of Arab, regional and international organizations specialized in disaster reduction and minimizing their effects will participate in the meeting. (wam)
