Why do the Turks have to vote once more?
In Turkey, a presidential candidate needs more than 50 percent of the votes in the first ballot to win. Neither Erdoğan (49.42 percent) nor Kılıçdaroğlu (44.95 percent) reached this mark on Sunday. In this case, the law provides for a run-off between the two best-placed candidates, which will take place two weeks following the first day of the election. This will be the first run-off in a Turkish presidential election. The third candidate, the right-wing nationalist Sinan Oğan, got 5.2 percent on Sunday and is eliminated. A fourth candidate, Muharrem Ince, withdrew his application before Sunday.
