Some Internet users already claim to feel more focused, happy and less dependent on their screens.

“If you have the attention span of a chickpea, this is for you,” reads the description of one of these videos. Content creators notably promote nature walks, meditation and low-sugar diets.

The approach can have a positive effect on short-term well-being, according to Anjali Raja Beharelle, but, for this Zurich expert in neuroscience, giving up these daily pleasures for a few days will have very little effect on the body. long-term organism. “I find the term ‘dopamine detox’ a bit misleading. The feeling of happiness is triggered by endorphins and serotonin, while the job of dopamine is to associate these rewards with the corresponding activities and create the motivation to do them once more,” she says.

No scientific evidence

For Anjali Raja Beharelle, it is a misunderstanding to think that one can fast from a hormone present naturally in the body: “We secrete dopamine at a basic frequency. What changes is how the system reacts to different stimuli,” she says. To date, there is no scientific proof of the effectiveness of this detox over the long term.
