It has been four months since the so-called ‘Operating Room CCTV Act’, which requires the installation of CCTV in operating rooms, went into effect.

However, dissatisfaction is growing as many patients and their guardians do not know that they will not be recorded unless they request it in advance before surgery.

This is reporter Tae-in Yoon’s report.

Kwon Geum-ja, who suffered from spinal stenosis, suddenly passed away while undergoing surgery at the hospital in October last year.

Even though it was not a serious surgery, the exact cause of death is not yet known.

The bereaved family suspects medical malpractice.

What on earth happened in the operating room?

The family requested to view the CCTV footage, but the only response from the hospital was that there was no recording.

This means that there was no request for recording before the surgery.

Since September of last year, if there is a prior request from the patient or guardian, scenes of surgery performed while the patient is unconscious due to general anesthesia, etc. must be filmed.

In other words, if there is no request, there is no obligation to record.

In addition, the enforcement regulations stipulate that notices must be posted inside the hospital.

The hospital where Mr. Kwon had his surgery said that they had been notified because they had posted a notice.

However, Kwon’s family claims that the notice was in a place where it might not be seen properly at the time.

Experts point out that although the law was introduced with the intention of preventing medical accidents, there are loopholes in the law.

It has been over 100 days since the law went into effect, but patients and families who are not familiar with the law are shedding belated tears over empty CCTV cameras.
