Gloomy weather, change of time and loss of light, autumn is conducive to vitamin cures. The trend is global, Belgians take more vitamins at this time of year. But is it really useful?
A pharmacy patient takes a course of vitamin C every year: “Generally I always take it in winter because we are a little more tired, we lack sleep and light. It boosts a little“.
Taking more vitamin in winter is a global trend, but is it really useful? For pharmacist Olivier Parvait, it depends on the situation: “vitamin intake is not necessary if you have a balanced diet, except for vitamin D which remains obligatory mainly for women, but also for men and children“, a decision which is justified because of the lack of light in our country.
Vitamin D deficiency can cause different symptoms. There are risks for bone metabolism but also for immunity. “You are less able to defend yourself once morest winter viruses, once morest these periods of reduced light, and you also risk having weight problems.“, explains general practitioner Dimitri Ivlef.
Beware of excess
We must therefore avoid consuming too little, but overdoing it is not ideal either. “Too much can cause death. A few months ago, instead of taking high-dose vitamin D once a week, a patient took it every day for several weeks.“This accumulation led to a death linked to an overdose of vitamin D,” says Olivier Parvais.
For other vitamins, it is case by case according to Olivier Parvait: “When there is a risk of deficiency, such as in pregnant women, undernourished elderly people or during a one-off event such as a move or a high-intensity sporting effort,… this can sometimes require a temporary intake of vitamins.“.
Making your own vitamin cocktail is also not recommended. Better to refer to health professionals.
