Marketed in 1998 in the United States and then in Europe, Viagra (sildenafil) is a vasodilator indicated for erectile dysfunction in men. In France, this tablet is only available on medical prescription.

Does Viagra affect erection duration or libido?

There are many fabrications surrounding the “blue pill”. In an interview given to the Cleveland ClinicDoctor Drogo Montague, urologist, has restored the truth regarding the effects of this treatment.

We often hear that Viagra causes very long erections. Nevertheless, it is not the case. Indeed, the duration of action of this medication is four to five hours, but this does not mean that the erection lasts this amount of time. By taking the tablet, the patient has an easier erection if he engages in sexual intercourse during this period.

Sometimes taking Viagra is confused with priapism, which can be a very rare effect of this medication. Priapism results in a prolonged, painful erection that was not caused by sexual stimulation or arousal. However, the risk of having a prolonged erection increases when the patient combines the tablet with certain penile injection therapies. “The combination of treatments has a cumulative effect – penile injection therapy makes your erections hard, and the addition of Viagra makes them harder and even longer lasting (…) So be careful and do not combine them,” recommended the Doctor Drogo Montague.

Viagra is wrongly associated with improving libido. This medication increases blood flow to the penis to get and maintain an erection in anticipation of sex, but it has no influence on sexual desire.

Viagra, a treatment considered reserved for the elderly.

Another myth regarding Viagra: it damages the eyes. The American Academy of Ophthalmology has noted that high doses of this medication may be correlated with temporary vision problems, but it poses little risk to vision.

During his interview, however, the urologist pointed out a possible side effect of Viagra: it can color vision blue for a few moments due to the chemicals it contains. These things can temporarily change the way light reaches your eyes. “This adverse effect can occur with higher doses, but it is rare,” reassured the specialist.

The blue pill is sometimes accused of having harmful effects on the heart. However, this treatment is not harmful to the heart system as long as it is not given at the same time as heart medications that include nitrates. This can cause drug interference and cause a drop in blood pressure, known as hypotension, which increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.

In the collective mind, taking Viagra is correlated with age. Although the prevalence of erectile dysfunction increases with age, younger men may be affected by this disorder. “If you have erectile dysfunction, do not hesitate to consult your doctor, regardless of your age (…) Many men are embarrassed, but they shouldn’t be. It’s regarding a common problem. It is possible to get help and it is worth trying,” concluded Dr Drogo Montague.
