The Truth About the Viral Video: Activist Allegedly Waves Flags from Great Pyramid of Giza

A video clip that its editors say shows an activist waving the Palestinian and Egyptian flags from the top of the Great Pyramid of Giza is going viral on social media, at a time when the Israeli army continues to bomb Gaza amid fighting with Hamas militants.

The video shows a man walking on the Great Pyramid of Giza while waving the Palestinian and Egyptian flags. Participants in the video commented: “Activist raises Palestinian flag atop Cheops Pyramid…”

The video, which was broadcast in several languages, attracted widespread interaction and was published by news pages and websites through their social media accounts.

“It is forbidden to climb the pyramid.”

The broadcast of this video in this form, which has garnered hundreds of shares on Facebook, comes at a time when the Israeli army continues its intense bombings on several areas of the Gaza Strip, including the town of Rafah, populated by displaced people, where the army is preparing for a ground operation in its war against Hamas, despite warnings from the international community, notably from the American ally.

There is no doubt that Egyptians have expressed solidarity with Gaza at several solidarity vigils, but this video circulating is edited and has nothing to do with that.

Ashraf Mohieddin, general director of the Pyramid Antiquities Zone, said in a statement to Agence France-Presse on April 23, 2024 that “the video is not real” and that “the climbing of the pyramid is prohibited.”

Egyptian authorities have already arrested people who climbed the pyramid.

What is the truth about the video?

As for the search for the video, it was published on April 13, 2024, through the account of a designer called Mustafa Al-Diasti on TikTok. This video has received over 1.1 million views.

Further research is guided by another video published by Al-Diyasti in 2019 (Archive 1, 2), which depicts the pyramid from almost the same angle, without showing anyone at its top.

Al-Diasti, whose account is called “100.pixels,” describes himself as a designer and artist who works with 3D techniques and visual effects.

His social media accounts are full of video clips taken from the air at the Pyramids of Giza, and it appears he worked on the artistic editing of some of them.

Agence France-Presse attempted to obtain a comment from Al-Diasti, but did not receive a response from him until the date of publication of this report.

Al-Diyasti had already explained to journalists from Agence France-Presse’s fact-checking service in 2023 how he had designed these clips, after a video of him was broadcast at that time in a misleading context.
