The ecological transition, in light of the European directives which provide for drastic cuts (up to 90%) in CO2 emissions from heavy vehicles by 2040, polarizes attention on the inaugural day of Transpotecthe review of freight transport and logistics scheduled at Milan Fair from Wednesday 8th to Saturday 11th May 2024. All the components of the road transport of goods send a clear and clear message to the Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini, present at the fair, to be delivered to Europe: in the transition phase the technological neutrality, overcoming the all-electric ideology. It is now clear, say the hauliers present in Milan, that the challenge of sustainability will not be won with one technology over another, but rather with the right mix of engines and technologies.
In this regard, Fai-Conftrasporto, in its Manifesto for Europe launched at Transpotec, speaks of European rules that are not very coherent and which entail unsustainable obligations for companies. Fai hopes that the future EU Parliament, the one that will emerge from the June elections, will introduce corrections. Fai also calls for the establishment of state aid to renew fleets, which considers all technological solutions, including those linked to biofuels. In Italy, incidentally, the average age of the fleet of heavy vehicles (Lorries) in circulation exceeds 14 years: 97% of the vehicles in circulation are powered by diesel engines, while the market share of electric trucks is equal to a very modest 0.3 percent. It should also be noted that in Italy 84% of goods move by road and the state of health of road transport affects the performance of the economy as a whole.
Technological mix
Manufacturers, for their part, are ready to take up the challenge of the technological mix. Transpotec is the plastic representation of this. Among the stands there is space for all alternative tractions. The most striking novelty of this edition is that for the first time all women are participating in the event eight sistersi.e. the truck manufacturers active in Italy: Daf, Daimler Truck, Ford Trucks, Scania, Iveco, Man, Renault Trucks and Volvo Trucks.
The manufacturers display their respective previews: new engines and services to meet the decarbonisation objectives established by the EU. What is striking is the plurality of solutions proposed. There are 100% electric trucks, which today can reach a range of up to 500 kilometres, but there is no shortage of ecologically equally valid alternatives.
Research in the world of fuels is in fact making very important steps forward. Biomethane stations are already operational on the market, representing a clean alternative to traditional diesel.
