The Tribune Sunday: A New Player in the Sunday Newspaper Market

It’s a launch like kiosks haven’t seen in a long time. After a summer marked by the editorial and social catastrophe at Sunday newspaper, a newcomer for the seventh day of the week appears at newsagents on Sunday October 8. Unveiled on August 20, this project was brought to fruition in a hurry. In the space of eighty days, the very recent deputy director of the title Bruno Jeudy recruited an editorial team of around fifteen people (Soazig Quéméner, from MarianneAnna Cabana, by BFM-TV, Ludovic Vigone, by L’Opinionetc.), invented a railway and imagined sections, in order to constitute “an open, nuanced and republican newspaper”, explains this former Paris Matchfired in the summer of 2022 for bringing the editorial opposition to the front page dedicated to the ultraconservative Cardinal Robert Sarah.

Although kept secret, the budget allocated to this transformation would exceed 8 million euros, according to our information. Originally intended for the redesign of the website and developments promised during the acquisition of the media, in May, from the entrepreneur Jean-Christophe Tortora by the billionaire Rodolphe Saadé (CMA CGM), this sum was increased to facing the costs of paper, but also those of the technical platform (editorial secretaries, proofreaders, layout artists) outsourced to the ETX Studio press agency (formerly Relaxnews).

The newspaper (48 pages for its first edition) is divided into two equal parts: the first gives pride of place to politics, the economy (partly provided by the site’s twenty journalists) and international news, the second to culture and the art of living. “The idea is to inspire people who love it, not to massacre it”announces Ms. Cabana, responsible for the book pages. With a launch in the middle of the Rugby World Cup and a few months before the Olympic Games, two events organized in France, it is impossible to ignore sport: its treatment will not be exhaustive, but “eventized”, promises Bruno Jeudy.

Effects on the market

The media column was entrusted to Philippe Vandel (ex-Europe 1) and the pages « food » old fashioned JDD Charlotte Langrand. “We aim to bring together a polarized France. We are not here to fight wars”launches Mr. Jeudy to the readers of Sunday newspaper that the new editorial line, marked on the extreme right by the choices of its editorial director Geoffroy Lejeune (ex-Current values), would be off-putting.
