The transcendence of research in medicine, by Tomás Chivato

“Clinical trials are key”, highlights the dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the San Pablo CEU University

We have commented on many occasions on the importance of research and within research, clinical trials are key to verifying the efficacy and, above all, the safety of new drugs.

In clinical trials we have different phases. It begins with experimentation on animals, also fulfilling ethical requirements for animal research, and then passing on to healthy people to check how the new drugs are metabolized to pass on to patients suffering from the disease in which the efficacy of said new drug is presumed.

For this, volunteers are necessary, healthy volunteers for the first phases of the clinical study, the clinical trial and volunteers already with diseases who want to join, who want to check the efficacy of these drugs. Without these volunteers we might not advance in the use of new drugs. So thank you very much to all those people who volunteer in the clinical trials.

Of course, there are many more factors. There are what we call companies that help make this happen. There is the pharmaceutical company and, of course, all this encompassed in the supervision carried out by the Ethics Committees in Medical Research and with medicines that exist in the hospitals where this research is carried out.

Thanks to all of them we can have new drugs that improve the quality of life in many diseases.
