Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who competed in the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, died on September 5 in a Kenyan hospital where she was admitted for burns caused by her boyfriend. The 33-year-old athlete was one of the fastest marathon runners in Ugandan history.
“Unfortunately, we lost her after all her organs failed last night,” said Dr Owen Menach, acting director of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. The athlete had burns on 80% of her body.

Cheptegei had two children from a first marriage and bought land in Kenya’s Trans Nzoia County, where he met Marangach.
The young woman built a house in that county, in the town of Kinyoro, on a plot of land where she lived with her children during training periods and, later, with her partner, until they began to distance themselves due to discrepancies related to the purchase of that land.
Rebecca had a piece of land in Kinyoro that she bought and it has brought her problems. I want to ask the (Kenyan) government to protect her children and their property as we cannot always be available to protect them,” said her father, Joseph Cheptegei.
The athlete’s father told reporters at the hospital that his daughter was a financial support for his family and, in particular, for paying for her siblings’ educational expenses.
“I have lost a daughter who has been helping me in many ways,” he said.

As Coe recalled when looking back on her career, “Rebecca was an incredibly versatile runner who still had a lot more to give on the roads, mountains and cross-country trails.”
