As the police announced, doctors and officials went to the village of Baraškai in the Vilnius district on Tuesday following receiving a call that the woman’s health had deteriorated. A call regarding the need for help for a mentally ill woman was received following noon.
According to the police, a woman in her 50s was aggressive, she beat the medical car with a shovel and attacked the doctors and the policemen of the Special Preparedness Department of the Vilnius District VPK with a knife.
The police officers used Taser and tear gas several times, but this did not stop the woman, so the officer born in the 1990s, with almost ten years of experience, shot the woman several times. According to the capital city police, a total of five shots were fired.
According to Ramūnas Matonis, the representative of the police department, the first shots were fired into the leg and arm, but the woman was not stopped. The last bullet hit the stomach, the woman died.
An official investigation has been launched into the incident, as well as a pre-trial investigation into murder and possible abuse. According to R. Matonis, these are standard actions following using a service weapon.
The son of a dead woman 15min said he might not believe such a turn of events. It is said that the mother’s illness sometimes worsened, but there have been no major conflicts so far.

When do doctors need the police?
The Vilnius branch of the Emergency Medical Service is also going to conduct its own investigation. Its leader is Tadeushas Rodzas 15min said that the medics at the scene were largely unharmed – none of them are receiving treatment, they finished their shift and are currently resting.
“We offered psychological help, but they refused.
We look forward to their detailed explanations as soon as they come to work. An audit will be conducted to ensure that such cases do not recur. All other employees should also be given recommendations on how to behave in similar situations. We will have to draw conclusions. And I think that not only we will have to draw conclusions, but also the police officers”, said the leader.
An audit will be carried out to ensure that such cases do not recur. It is also necessary to give recommendations to all employees on how to behave in similar situations.
According to T. Rodz, there are cases when ambulance medics need the help of police officers: “Practically, every day there are inadequate drunk persons, so we call for help, if they are injured and refuse help, they are unspeakable, and they need help, stitches or the like. Then the police officers are called and then they are talked into going to the hospital if necessary.”
Having information regarding the mentally ill, the police also need medical help if that patient is aggressive.
T. Rodzas did not want to say how long the medics had to wait for the police officers when they went to see the aggressive patient. According to him, when exactly the officers appeared at the scene, the police should answer. The medics, he says, went there “19 minutes following they got loose and got the call.” He might not say how much time had passed since the call of the shot woman’s son to BPC (12:13 p.m.).
