More than 30,000 runners will start at the Vienna City Marathon. However, the major event also means problems for motorists, although all urban motorways and expressways will always be passable without hindrance. However, the exits from the A23 in the direction of Zentrum/Schüttelstraße and the access from the A4 in the direction of the city center from the Prater junction are closed, according to the ÖAMTC.
The Donauufer Autobahn (A22) is also closed to Wagramer Straße and Reichsbrücke between 4:00 a.m. and around 11:00 a.m. The western entrance is free, so access to the airport from the west is possible via Hietzinger Kai, Schönbrunner Schloßstraße, Grüner Berg and Altmannsdorfer Straße to the Tangente and Ost Autobahn (A4).
Coming from the south you can take the S1. From the districts 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, and 22 it goes over the North or Floridsdorfer bridge – A22 – A23. In the inner city, the ÖAMTC recommends the Handelskai as an alternative route.
Ring blocked for 48 hours
According to the ÖAMTC, the ring road between Stadiongasse and Schottengasse will be closed continuously from Friday 8 p.m. to Sunday 8 p.m. It can be crossed in the areas of Johannesgasse, Schwarzenbergplatz, Kärntner Straße and Schottengasse, among others; the Linke Wienzeile via Pilgrambrücke, Reinprechtsdorfer Straße, Gurtel and Ullmannstraße; the Obere Donaustraße at times over the Danube Canal bridges. According to the ÖAMTC, waiting times must be planned for.
Four running competitions between the Prater and the Burgtheater will already take place on Saturday in the run-up to the marathon: The “Vienna 10 K”, the “Children’s Run 2 K”, the “Coca-Cola Inclusion Run” and for the second time also “The Daily Mile Run 1, 6K”. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the latest, some important streets will be closed in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd districts. These are the Ringstraße in sections from the Urania, the Schüttelstraße towards the city center from the Prater junction, the Stadionallee, the Praterstern, the Franzensbrücke and Franzensbrückenstraße, the Vordere Zollamtsstraße, Weiskirchnerstraße and the Wollzeile. According to the Ö3 traffic forecast, drivers should give way in good time during this time, for example via the Zweierlinie or over the Gurtel.
“The Vienna City Marathon is not only a sporting highlight, but also demands maximum performance from the police over the entire weekend,” emphasized Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP). He thanked all the emergency services involved “for their great commitment to ensure that everything ran smoothly”.
