Few collaborations in rock ‘n’ roll have been as fruitful or explosive as that of Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry.
Tyler and Perry – aka the Toxic Twins – have given the Boston band huge commercial success over the past 50 years with albums such as Toys In The Attic, Rocks, Permanent Vacation et Pump.
But their relationship has at times been dysfunctional and volatile. Perry left Aerosmith in 1979, returning five years later. In 2009, Tyler announced he would be focusing on “the Tyler brand”, prompting Joe Perry to claim that Aerosmith was looking for a new vocalist.
But in a long interview published in the magazine Classic RockJoe Perry has shed light on the sometimes rocky relationship between the two men, refuting rumors that they do not get along.
“It’s not bullshit man, he’s probably my best friend through it all”he says. “We just know we’re different. Even in the 70s, we were the ones who went scuba diving together.”
“In the 80s and 90s, Billie [la femme de Joe Perry] and I bought a bus so we might go out with our kids and take a dog with us. I remember we went to the Las Vegas desert with Steven. They had a truck in the big flat desert with a parachute, and we all took turns getting into that thing.”
In the same interview, the musician recalls his first meeting with Tyler, a few months before they became members of the group.
“The first time I met him, I didn’t really meet him, so to speak”says the guitarist. “I worked at a burger joint in the area, and I did everything from cooking fries to sweeping the floor and taking out the trash.”
“His family had a house there, kind of a bed and breakfast, and every summer he came from New York with one of his bands. I remember them coming in and behaving like they thought that rockstars had to do, which was to throw food at each other. So they left and I had to clean up following them.”
Joe Perry also spoke regarding Tyler’s decision to become a judge on the American show American Idol for two seasons, starting in 2010.
“When Steven was on that show, I was like, ‘Holy shit, we’re gonna have to plan the band’s career around this.’ But God bless him, not everyone gets a chance to do that. , so he thought he was going to be in. There was a lot to do, so I wrote a lot, that’s why I have seven or eight solo albums. I just wish some of those songs be… I played most of those songs to Steven.”
The guitarist also acknowledged that public bickering between Tyler and the other members of the band around this time may have done more harm than good.
In 2008, Tyler jammed with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin following the band’s frontman Robert Plant refused to take part in a real reunion following their only comeback gig at London’s 02 Arena. The Aerosmith singer then announced that he would focus on the “Tyler brand”.
“I’m not sure how I feel regarding it”the guitarist says today regarding their public spat. “They say all press is welcome, but I’m not sure I agree with that. Maybe we felt like we had to do something for our fans. I mightn’t tell you. say. We were so far apart that I don’t know. Maybe we were trying to clear things up and be a little more honest and let people know what was going on . I don’t know”.
Aerosmith is regarding to go on tour with the Black Crowes. Produced by Live Nation, 40-date North American tour kicks off in Philadelphia, in Pennsylvania on September 2, and will stop at iconic arenas across the United States and Canada. and in Canada, including Kia Forum in Los Angeles, Madison Square Garden in New York, Moody Center in Dallas, Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, United Center in Chicago, Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, and more , before ending in Montreal, Quebec, at the Bell Center on January 26 (the band’s last appearance at the Bell Center was in April 2004). The highlight of the tour will be a stop in Boston for a special home show on New Year’s Eve 2023.
In a statement, Aerosmith said: “It’s not goodbye, it’s PEACE OUT! Get ready and walk in this direction, you’re going to have the best show of our lives”.
It was also confirmed that drummer Joey Kramer would not be taking part in the tour. “While Joey Kramer remains a beloved founding member of Aerosmith, he has sadly made the decision to skip the dates currently scheduled in order to focus entirely on his family and his health,” the band said. “The Legendary Presence and matchless Joey behind the drum kit will be sorely missed.”
Some of the lives planned at the start of the last stage of the residency had been canceled following singer Steven Tyler checked himself into a rehab center. They also have canceled some of the last concerts in December due to Tyler’s medical condition.
