The Toulouse Stadium will once once more experience the emotions of a European evening this week. The last time was December 3, 2009. This Thursday, TFC will face the Austrians LASK, logically the weakest opponent in the group.
The third football force in the country
Club from the city of Linz, third in the country in terms of population with around 200,000 inhabitants, the Linzer Athletik Sport Klub was created in 1908. 125 years of history on the banks of the Danube, around twenty European campaigns and a major trophy . An Austrian championship title that dates back to 1965. In the 2000s, the club experienced financial problems before returning to the forefront for a few seasons. Notably thanks to Oliver Glasner (2015-2019 in Austria), coach who will lift the Europa League with Frankfurt in 2022.
Often placed, LASK has lived in the shadow of Red Bull Salzburg and Sturm Graz in recent seasons. Salzburg have won 14 of the last 17 Austrian league titles up for grabs. “In France you know Salzburg more, that’s for sure. LASK is the third force in Austrian football. This club is nevertheless very popular. We always have 12 to 15,000 spectators at the stadium”, explains Dennis Bankowsky, journalist in Linz*.* LASK now plays in a brand new stadium inaugurated last February which has some 20,000 seats. It was on this pitch that Liverpool came to win on the first day of this Europa League (1-3, the English were trailing until the hour mark).
The first confrontation once morest TFC
Since its return to the elite, the Austrian club has become accustomed to competing in European campaigns in recent seasons. This is the first time that Toulouse and LASK will cross swords in history. Toulouse, following the draw in Belgium once morest Union Saint-Gilloise, must win to place itself before the double confrontation once morest Liverpool. “Here in Austria, I admit to you that we don’t know Toulouse too much. Much more regarding PSG or Monaco, because there is an Austrian coach on the bench. People hope that the club will grab second place behind Liverpool but I think even though the French championship is better than our Austrian Bundesliga”, continues Dennis Bankowsky.
The Austrians from LASK will discover the Stadium pitch this Wednesday late followingnoon where training is planned for them, a few hours following a TFC session.
