The dangers obese people face

According to Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Anh Tuan – Head of gastrointestinal surgery department, 108 Central Military Hospital – obese young people often fall into a deadlock. Many young people stand at the door of life, but because they are too fat, they cannot develop themselves.

Obese young people lack confidence and want to assert themselves, so they often study hard, study very well, but when they graduate from university, they can’t find a job. In many countries, it is forbidden to discriminate once morest fat people, but in Vietnam there is no regulation banning body discrimination, so most obese people still face obstacles.

He added that obese people also have a difficult emotional life, less happy family. Therefore, many young people go to the doctor to share “tears” situations. Some young people fall into depression and mental disorders because of their obesity and stigmatization. They try all ways to lose weight but the success rate is very low.

Obese people face many diseases such as arthritis and osteoarthritis in more than 50%, sleep apnea. Obese people also have asthma, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes. Therefore, we need proper awareness of obesity and early treatment. Treatment methods are comprehensive, from psychological, physical, diet, exercise, long-term care. Depending on the specific case, the doctor may prescribe medical or surgical treatment.

This doctor also shared that he used to receive many young people over 20 to ask for advice on losing weight by shrinking the stomach. For this measure, Associate Professor Tuan said that reducing the stomach is indicated for people with a body mass index (BMI) over 35. People with a BMI of 30-35 if obesity combines with diabetes, high blood pressure, joint pain or people with BMI between 27-30, obese with diabetes but insulin resistance.
